Ultrafine alumina particles have been prepared by the mechanical milling and subsequent heat treatment of a mixture of AICI3 and CaO. Heat treatment of the as‐milled powder at temperatures above 350°C and washing with water resulted in γ‐Al 2 O 3 particles 10–20 nm in size. Single phase α‐Al 2 O 3 was formed in the sample after heat treatment at 1250°C. This study demonstrates a novel process for synthesizing nanoscale alumina particles.
