The last few decades have witnessed an impressive advance in the development of materials for skeletal repair and reconstruction. In this review, our focus is placed upon the use of polymers and polymeric biocomposites as implants for the repair and reconstruction of diseased or damaged hard tissue. In particular, the challenges and recent results related to the designing, processing and physical properties of biopolymers and polymer–ceramic composites are discussed. The biocompatibility property of these materials is also discussed.
