Photometric observations of 145 randomly selected proper-motion stars yield a minimum of 19 late- type white dwarfs on the assumption that space velocities greater than 600 km sec' do not occur among these objects. The possible sources of large ultraviolet excesses in late-type stars are also discussed. At least four new possible late-type white-dwarf members of the Hyades are isolated
