The reduction of pentavalent tantalum to tantalum metal in molten eutectic mixture has been studied by chronopotentiometry between 650° and 850°C. It is a two‐step reduction apparently involving a three‐electron step followed by a two‐electron step. The first step is diffusion controlled, and the diffusion coefficient of the reacting species is at 750°C and its activation energy 8.5 kcal/mole.
