Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3-D printing, is a generic term that encompasses a broad array of processes that are used to directly synthesize a 3-D object from raw materials. The processes are generally performed using a layer-by-layer deposition or growth sequence that is under computer control. The applications for AM technologies are many, including architecture, automotive, aerospace, biotech, electronics, fashion, and food, to name just a few. From 2004 to 2014, the AM industry showed a significant growth of around 20% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), from 2010 even more than 30% (CAGR). The market for AM is still expected to grow significantly throughout the upcoming ten years.
