The magnetostriction of high permeability grain oriented silicon steel has been examined under zero applied stress at angles to the rolling direction from 0° to 90°. A system of domain switching processes has been considered to account for the magnetostriction levels measured over this range. It is concluded that the magnetostriction vs angle characteristic is determined by three principal types of domain activity. Each has a particular area of dominance with a gradual change over between them.
