The dilatometric thermal expansion of a tantalum monocarbide rod was measured from 21° to 3020°C in a 20 psig argon atmosphere using a split-beam optical comparator. The linear thermal expansion from 20° to 3000°C was found to be 2.5%, which corresponds to an average coefficient of linear thermal expansion of 8.4×10−6 per C°. No evidence of a high-temperature phase change was found.
