Balloon-assisted technique successfully retrieves a fractured diagnostic catheter during infant PDA closure.
Case Report (n=1)
This case report demonstrates the feasibility of a novel balloon-assisted technique for retrieving an intravascular foreign body (fractured catheter) in a pediatric patient.
Balloon-assisted retrieval succeeds in infant PDA closure; leaves open generalizability beyond this single case.
Percutaneous retrieval of intravascular foreign body can be done by snares, biopsy forceps, dormia basket or tip deflecting wires. Herein, we report percutaneous retrieval a fractured multipurpose diagnostic catheter by balloon assisted technique in a 10-months old baby while doing device closure of a patent ductus arteriosus. The catheter got fractured at the junction of shaft and the tip while manipulation to right ventricular outflow tract during antegrade wiring. The fractured proximal end was trapped at the tip of venous sheath which was successfully wired with percutaneous coronary angioplasty wire and retrieved with the help of 1.5 × 10 mm and 2 × 10 mm Maverick balloon (Boston scientific; USA). This is the first ever report of balloon assisted retrieval of intravascular foreign body.

Sinha et al. (2018) conducted a case report in Patent ductus arteriosus with fractured catheter (n=1). Balloon assisted retrieval technique was evaluated on Successful retrieval of fractured catheter. Balloon assisted technique successfully retrieved a fractured multipurpose diagnostic catheter in a 10-month-old baby undergoing patent ductus arteriosus closure.
