This study demonstrates that Na+/Ca2+ exchange significantly contributes to the later part of the action potential plateau and its duration in human ventricular muscle.
Schouten et al. (1990) studied Ventricular septal defects (n=49). Various stimulus patterns, Ca2+ antagonists, and variations in extracellular ionic composition vs. Baseline/control conditions was evaluated on Action potential duration and force of isometric contractions. In isolated human ventricular trabeculae, the early part of the action potential plateau is dominated by inward Ca2+ current, whereas Na+/Ca2+ exchange tends to lengthen the action potential.
