The Thomas—Fermi—Dirac theory is shown to be remarkably accurate in predicting the experimentally available Hugoniot of argon. Furthermore, the theory predicts equally well both the 0°K isotherm and the Hugoniot of xenon. For the xenon Hugoniot it is shown that electronic excitations contribute significantly at the higher pressures.
