This paper describes the unique emotional reaction experienced by chronic renal patients at the time of initial diagnosis, drawing on the practice of two social workers involved both with inpatients and outpatients receiving dialysis treatment. Certain theoretical formulations are developed as a background for utilization of specific interventive strategies which reduce stress. Case material is presented which illustrates both the feelings unleashed by this grim diagnosis and the techniques employed to aid the adjustment of its victims.
