Nurse migration and retention are global challenges, highlighting the importance of understanding international work experiences. Thus, this study aims to describe the experiences of Finnish registered nurses regarding their intention to stay in Norway or Sweden. Eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data were analysed using inductive content analysis. The study adhered to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Six main categories were identified: positive experiences of professional recognition; collegial and humane practices in teamwork and leadership; employee-centred professional experiences; positive workplace ambience and interplay; perceived quality and balance in work life; and experiences of adverse working circumstances and challenges to adaptation to a foreign country. This study adds to current knowledge on nurse retention among internationally mobile nurses by demonstrating how everyday organisational experiences shape intentions to remain in the host country within broadly similar Nordic healthcare contexts.
