Materials analysis demonstrates effective X-ray attenuation in bismuth-aluminum oxide composites, suggesting that incorporating up to fifty percent alumina preserves radiation shielding.
Bi 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 powders were synthesized by combustion and combined in different proportions (75/25, 50/50, and 25/75 wt.%) to investigate the effect of composition on the properties of Bi 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 composites. XRD confirmed the coexistence of crystalline α-Bi 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 phases, with crystallite sizes between 31.4 and 54.0 nm and crystallinity values of 71.5-81.9%. Increasing Al 2 O 3 content reduced density (7.08-3.92 g/cm 3 ), surface area, and pore volume, while promoting a transition from porous Bi-rich agglomerates to more compact Al-rich structures. X-ray attenuation parameters showed a progressive decrease in shielding performance as Al 2 O 3 content increased; however, the Bi50Al50 composite retained a high effective atomic number (Zeff=66.03) and significant attenuation capability. These results demonstrate that up to 50 wt.% Al 2 O 3 can be incorporated without substantial loss of shielding performance.
