Scenario analysis reveals shifting process gas availability for methanol production across steel decarbonization pathways, highlighting continuous operating windows for chemical utilization design.
The decarbonization of the steel industry alters the gas supply basis of integrated sites. This work assesses whether internal gas availability remains sufficient for a defined methanol capacity within the assessment window 2030–2060. Three site sizes are evaluated for two steelmaking technology routes: direct reduction (DR) with a melter/submerged arc furnace while retaining basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking, or DR followed by electric arc furnace steelmaking. Two transition paces are applied to derive stepwise availability corridors for the resulting gas streams, which are compared with concept‐specific gas demands to identify continuous operating windows and risks of changing boundary conditions. The results provide planning guidance for robust front‐end design under evolving gas portfolios.
