Hypothesis-generating for Ang II-Na permeability effects in vascular smooth muscle; leaves open any clinical relevance in humans.
Does a subpressor concentration of Angiotensin II alter membrane permeability and tension in rat vascular smooth muscle?
Subpressor concentrations of Angiotensin II increase passive sodium permeability in vascular smooth muscle, which may elevate vascular tone when sodium pump activity is impaired.
Katsuaki Ito (1982) studied this question. Angiotensin II vs. Untreated muscles was evaluated on Isometric tensions and cellular Na contents. Pretreatment with a subpressor concentration of angiotensin II significantly enhanced contractions and increased cellular Na in rat aortic strips in K+-free solution.
