In situ transmission electron microscopy has been used to examine the domain structures arising from several types of phase transitions in perovskite-structured materials. Dark field imaging techniques have been used to isolate different types of domains in some technologically important ceramics. The complex domain structures which occur in Pb(SC1/2Ta1/2)O3 have been studied as a function of temperature and the observed changes have been discussed. The orientational and translational (antiphase) domains which arise from octahedral tilt transitions have been illustrated. Finally, the domain structures in bulk and thin film Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 have been compared and contrasted.
