Schizophrenia has been called "arguably the worst disease affecting mankind." The worldwide lifetime prevalence of the disorder is ∼1%. In 1990, the cost of caring for patients with schizophrenia in the United States was estimated to be $33 billion, accounting for ∼2.5% of total health care expenditures. The substantial funds being spent on the disease only reach a fraction of the affected population, since an estimated third to half of the homeless population, who never receive care, suffer from schizophrenia.
