Modern technological progress demands the use of materials at increasingly higher temperatures. One of the most critical factors in considering such applications—perhaps the most critical one—is creep behaviour. By means of thermal actuation materials, even when subjected to a constant load, slowly deform. At high temperatures this slow plastic deformation, or creep deformation, may proceed indefinitely and eventually the material fractures.
