Radicle growth of stratified Italian plum seeds ( Prunus domestica cv. Italian) was inhibited when treated with extracts of unstratified plum seeds. An inhibitor was identified by gas-liquid chromatography as abscisic acid (ABA). Analyses of stratified seeds showed that gibberellin-like substances increased and ABA decreased during a 90-day period. Intact unstratified seeds did not germinate when treated with gibberellic acid (GA) and N-6-benzyladenine (N-6-BA), however, these materials did promote germination of unstratified seeds with testas removed.
