The concentration of vitamin B12 occurring in Sargasso Sea waters over the period of one year is given. A seasonal cycle in the euphotic zone corresponding to the cycle of primary production was evidenced. It is postulated that while B12 may not control production rates per se, it probably exerts controlling influences on the species composition of the phytoplankton population.
