This paper examines the relationships between family structure type of mate-selection system and the cultural endorsement of romantic love as a basis for mate selection. Previous research in this aera has produced results which appear to be contradictory. Crosscultural data from a sample of 117 societies are employed to test hypotheses to the effect that autonomous mate selection and romantic love are more common in societies with nuclear than extended family systems; the hypotheses are supported with certain qualifications. An attempt is made to reconcile these findings with earlier research. (authors)
