The molecular weight of purified bovine and porcine submaxillary mucins has been investigated by several techniques. Due to the polydispersity of the material, the molecular weight of a given sample has been shown to vary within large limits according to the method used. The apparent molecular weight is also influenced by the experimental conditions such as ionic strength, speed used to reach sedimentation equilibrium, and concentration of the sample.
