Malignant cells differ in chemical composition from normal cells, and nuclear magnetic resonance can detect such differences, thereby offering a new biophysical approach to diagnosis. An instrument that focuses the NMR beam has been developed and has already proved successful in detecting a tumor in a living experimental animal. Other implications of the technique for human cancer are discussed.
