Key result
Depressed suicide is linked to a ~70% higher anterior cingulate 5-HT2CR mRNA ABDE isoform proportion.
Why the study?
Are there region-specific alterations in RNA editing of the 5-HT2CR mRNA in the cortex of depressed suicides compared to controls?
Population
Age- and sex-matched non-psychiatric drug-free controls and depressed suicides
Comparison
Assessment of 5-HT2CR mRNA-editing profile using… vs Non-psychiatric drug-free controls

Are there region-specific alterations in RNA editing of the 5-HT2CR mRNA in the cortex of depressed suicides compared to controls?
Region-specific changes in RNA editing of 5-HT2CR mRNA, particularly increased editing in the anterior cingulate cortex, may contribute to the etiology of major depressive disorder and suicide.
Weissmann et al. (2016) conducted a case-control in Major Depressive Disorder and Suicide (n=16). Major depressive disorder with suicide vs. Non-psychiatric controls was evaluated on Relative proportion of ABDE isoform of 5-HT2CR mRNA in the anterior cingulate cortex (BA24). In depressed suicides, the relative proportion of the ABDE isoform of 5-HT2CR mRNA was increased by 70% in the anterior cingulate cortex compared to non-psychiatric controls.
