The intensity distribution in the near field of a square-wave modulated phase grating is calculated. It is found that the Talbot images as well as the Fresnel images of this phase grating are similar to the object structure. The Lau effect for the case of square-wave modulated phase grating is studied with reference to diffraction theory.
