Optical method yields refractive indices for homogeneous fluids; leaves open reliable application to heterogeneous turbid samples.
This study describes an optical method for measuring refractive indices of fluids, noting limitations when applied to highly heterogeneous turbid fluids.
Meeten et al. (1995) studied this question. Refractive index measurement by reflection near the critical angle was evaluated on Real and imaginary refractive indices derived from specular optical reflectance. Measuring specular optical reflectance near the critical angle successfully yielded refractive indices for transparent and absorbing fluids, but deviated for some turbid fluids due to heterogeneity.
