Many papers on force fields and force constants have appeared in recent journals. However, it seems difficult to make a survey. The problem is com plex and in some cases we have no commonly accepted opinions as to what is the established fact. One of the authors published an article on this subject (1), in which he described a method of finding the limit of information given by the observed data. In the present review we shall try to follow this procedure and to summarize the information given by recent papers. This review is not comprehensive but deals mainly with papers on force constants appearing in 1970 and 1971, since Maki (2) and Overend (3) have covered the earlier literature.
