Enterovirus strains DN-19, Hu-39, Pett, and Baltazar were shown by several immunological techniques to be antigenic variants of coxsackievirus type A24.
Enterovirus strains DN-19, Hu-39, Pett and Baltazar are antigenic variants of coxsackievirus type A24 rather than new enterovirus types.
No immediate change to clinical diagnostics; leaves open whether A24 antigenic variants alter human disease patterns.
Schmidt, N. J. and E. H. Lennette (Calif. State Dept. of Public Health, Berkeley, Calif. 94704). Antigenic variants of coxsackievirus type A24. Amer. J. Epid., 1970, 97: 90–109.—Enterovirus strains DN-19, Hu-39, Pett and Baltazar, previously considered to represent possible new enterovirus types, were shown by several different immunological technics to be antigenic variants of coxsackievirus type A24. Plaque reduction neutralization tests were more sensitive than conventional tube neutralization tests for demonstrating the relationship between coxsackievirus type A24, DN-19, Hu-39 and Baltazar viruses, but Pett virus showed only a low level of crossing with the other strains. Cross complement fixation tests were even more sensitive than plaque reduction tests for demonstrating the relationship between A24, DN-19, Hu-39 and Baltazar viruses, with homologous and heterologous titers differing by no more than 2-fold, but Pett virus showed a lower degree of relationship to the other strains in CF tests. Immunodifrusion tests gave conclusive evidence of the relationship of the four enterovirus strains, including Pett, to coxsackievirus type A24; immunoprecipitates formed by antigens and immune sera to coxsackievirus type A24, DN-19, Hu-39, Pett and Baltazar all showed reactions of identity with one another, and the antigens to these virus strains showed no reactivity with immune sera to the other currently recognized enteroviruses or to certain enterovirus candidate strains.

Schmidt et al. (1970) studied Coxsackievirus type A24 variants. Immunological techniques (plaque reduction neutralization, cross complement fixation, immunodiffusion) was evaluated on Antigenic relationship between enterovirus strains and coxsackievirus type A24. Enterovirus strains DN-19, Hu-39, Pett, and Baltazar were shown by several immunological techniques to be antigenic variants of coxsackievirus type A24.
