Simple probability arguments are used to show that in random packing the average number of discs contacting an origin disc which will ensure the stability of that origin disc is n s =3.2 when the discs all have the same radius. In binary mixtures of discs n s varies only a little as a function of concentration, even when the radius ratio is as large as 5:1.
