Techniques of focusing and monochromating the x radiation from a synchrotron source will be discussed. Phase-space techniques, widely used in charged-particle beam transport, will be applied to describe the source and optical elements ni the focusing systems. The properties of focusing and nonfocusing x-ray optics will be presented with emphasis on the advantages of each.
