Left upper lobectomy auto-stapler injury to the pericardial reflection linked to delayed life-threatening cardiac tamponade.
Why the study?
Cardiac tamponade after pulmonary lobectomy is extremely rare, with no reports occurring over 1 month postoperatively from stapler entrapment of the pericardial reflection.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Cardiac tamponade due to pericardial hemorrhage from the pulmonary vein stump can occur over a month after pulmonary lobectomy even without intrapericardial procedures.
Clinicians should remain alert for delayed tamponade after lobectomy; this case leaves open the true incidence of staple-related pericardial injury.

Oki et al. (2022) conducted a case report in Pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma (n=1). Left upper lobectomy was evaluated on Cardiac tamponade. A 71-year-old man developed life-threatening cardiac tamponade due to pericardial hemorrhage 34 days after undergoing a left upper lobectomy, caused by involvement of the pericardial reflection by an auto-stapler.
