Fatal calf CHF linked to rare concurrent Type C AVSD and double orifice mitral valve.
Why the study?
Atrioventricular septal defects and double orifice mitral valves are rarely reported in cattle and have not been previously described concurrently.
Case Report (n=1)
No
This report documents the first known case of concurrent complete atrioventricular septal defect and double orifice mitral valve in cattle.
May inform differentials for CHF in calves; leaves open prevalence of concurrent congenital defects in cattle.
A 3–4‐week‐old, suckler, bull calf from Durham County, United Kingdom died due to congestive heart failure. Postmortem examination identified a Type C complete atrioventricular septal defect with concurrent double orifice mitral valve as the cause of the heart failure. Both atrioventricular septal defects and double orifice mitral valves have only rarely been reported in cattle, and never concurrently, to the authors’ knowledge.

Strugnell et al. (2024) conducted a case report in Congestive heart failure, complete atrioventricular septal defect, double orifice mitral valve (n=1). Postmortem examination of a 3-4-week-old bull calf that died of congestive heart failure identified a rare concurrent Type C complete atrioventricular septal defect and double orifice mitral valve.
