Review identifies 23 NANDA diagnoses to guide post-op pediatric nursing care for tetralogy of Fallot.
Why the study?
Children with tetralogy of Fallot face major postoperative challenges, requiring nurses to understand underlying mechanisms to support physiological and psychosocial adaptation.
What are the nursing interventions in the postoperative period following corrective and palliative surgery for pediatric patients with tetralogy of Fallot?
Systematic Review (n=56)
What are the nursing interventions in the postoperative period following corrective and palliative surgery for pediatric patients with tetralogy of Fallot?
This scoping review provides a structured set of evidence-based nursing care plans, including 23 NANDA diagnoses, for the physiological and psychosocial adaptation of pediatric patients recovering from tetralogy of Fallot surgery.
Supports NANDA-based care plans for postoperative pediatric TOF patients; extends literature synthesis on physiological and psychosocial nursing diagnoses.
Introduction: Children with tetralogy of Fallot face great challenges during their postoperative stage, so nurses must recognize the mechanisms involved in this process, to help them reach an integrated physiological and psychosocial level of adaptation. Objective: The objective of the study was to establish nursing interventions for children following palliative or corrective surgery for tetralogy of Fallot.Materials and methods: Using the methodology proposed by Fawcett et al. and the Joanna Briggs Institute, we searched 10 databases and search engines for articles published from 2014 to 2019 using 2 formulas: Pediatric AND Tetralogy of Fallot AND Post-operative and Pediatric AND Tetralogy of Fallot AND Postoperative AND Psychosocial Adaptation. Results: 1.901 studies were obtained, of which 56 met all eligibility criteria. The results were structured according to the nursing care plan and were framed within the modes of adaptation and needs of Callista Roy's adaptation model. With the information obtained, 12 NANDA diagnoses corresponding to the physiological mode of adaptation and 11 to the psychosocial mode were constructed. Conclusion: There is relevant information to establish care interventions within the nursing scope of practice in this pediatric intensive care unit context, as interventions were obtained to address all the needs proposed by the epistemological model.

González-Rodríguez et al. (2023) conducted a systematic review in Tetralogy of Fallot (n=56). Nursing care interventions was evaluated on Identification of nursing interventions and NANDA diagnoses. A scoping review of 56 studies identified 12 physiological and 11 psychosocial NANDA diagnoses to guide nursing care for pediatric patients following surgery for tetralogy of Fallot.
