This paper introduces an application of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) device called a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission tie line for a two-area load frequency control system. The HVDC is connected in parallel with an AC transmission line between two areas of an interconnected power system. The essential feature of HVDC FACTS selecting that it is easy to control, working in a wide range of tie-line power, and it has fast response and smaller time constant than other FACTS such as STATCOM, energy magnetic storage device. The PI controller parameters are designed using metaheuristic optimization algorithms such as the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and gray wolf optimizer (GWO) for comparison. The effect of FACTS controllers with optimal PI controllers is achieved using the Matlab/Simulink package program. The proposed system is subjected to different disturbances to validate the effectiveness of the FACTS controller, such as load disturbances, nonlinear generation rate constraints, and system parameter excursion. A Comparison between the system responses in terms of frequency deviations and tie-line power deviations using GA optimization and GWO is obtained. In addition, the system responses with and without the HVDC FACTS device is analyzed. The digital results prove that the power of the proposed techniques in terms of the fast response of frequency and tie-line power deviations.
