Bipolar irrigated RF ablation via right thoracotomy shows feasibility during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.
Case Report (n=8)
Left atrial ablation with bipolar irrigated radio-frequency can be performed through a single right thoracotomy during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.
Feasible in small case series during minimally invasive mitral surgery; leaves open comparative efficacy versus standard ablation.
Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Mitral valve disease is often associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), also due to the ageing of the population. We present a technique to perform a left atrial ablation with bipolar irrigated radio-frequency (RF) through a single right thoracotomy. We have operated on eight patients: six female with a mean age 68+/-8 years. Six patients suffered from permanent AF and other two from paroxysmal AF.

Solinas et al. (2009) conducted a case report in Atrial fibrillation and mitral valve disease (n=8). Left atrial ablation with bipolar irrigated radio-frequency was evaluated. Left atrial ablation with bipolar irrigated radio-frequency through a single right thoracotomy was performed in 8 patients with atrial fibrillation during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.
