The problems involved with the use of flow cells for on-line HPLC/FT-IR measurements are summarized and several approaches for eliminating the solvent rapidly and automatically prior to the measurement of the infrared spectra of the solutes are described. The best of these techniques involves a preliminary concentration step followed by a final solvent elimination, at which time the solute is deposited on KCI powder. The diffuse reflectance infrared spectrum of the deposited solute is then measured. The complete operation of this system is controlled by a microcomputer. Submicrogram detection limits have been found for most nonvolatile compounds.
