Replicated anther culture experiments with 10 widely grown varieties of winter wheat demonstrated four of the genotypes to be responsive with one to two green plants per 100 anthers on average. Two varieties produced high numbers of albino plants, while the four remaining varieties were generally recalcitrant to the in vitro methods used. The variety ‘Sleipner’ generally responds with green plants, both when used as a pure line and in hybrid combinations. The present anther culture method might be useful for rapid inbreeding in carefully selected well responding breeding populations.
