May support drainage plus targeted antibiotics in rare purulent pericarditis; leaves open optimal regimens for Streptococcus milleri group.
Case Report (n=1)
Purulent pericarditis caused by the Streptococcus milleri group is extremely rare but can be successfully managed with emergency pericardial drainage when conservative antibiotic therapy fails.
Tokuyasu et al. (2009) conducted a case report in Purulent pericarditis (n=1). Panipenem/betamipron and pericardial drainage was evaluated on Clinical recovery. Treatment with panipenem/betamipron and emergency pericardial drainage successfully resolved an extremely rare case of purulent pericarditis with cardiac tamponade caused by a Streptococcus milleri group strain.
