Previously healthy adolescent develops unusual purulent pericarditis from Streptococcus intermedius without traditional risk factors.
Case Report (n=1)
Highlights an unusual presentation of purulent pericarditis caused by Streptococcus intermedius in a healthy adolescent, suggesting potential novel molecular mechanisms of the pathogen.
Raises awareness for S. intermedius in atypical purulent pericarditis; leaves open pathogenesis and need for larger studies.
Purulent pericarditis is a rare diagnosis with life-threatening implications due to the rapid accumulation of pericardial material, swiftly progressing to tamponade physiology. The nature of its quickly evolving and severe implications demands a low threshold for diagnostic consideration where appropriate. We present an unusual case of purulent pericarditis secondary to Streptococcus intermedius in a previously healthy male adolescent without traditional risk factors, which raises the question of whether emergent S. intermedius species may have acquired novel molecular mechanisms.

Denby et al. (2017) conducted a case report in Purulent pericarditis (n=1). Streptococcus intermedius infection was evaluated. A previously healthy male adolescent developed purulent pericarditis secondary to Streptococcus intermedius, an unusual presentation without traditional risk factors.
