The transport of gqycine, as glycine-l-C ~, across the cell membrane of washed bovine spermatozoa has been studied. It was demonstrated that glycine transport was sensitive to incubation temperature and to metabolic inhibitors.Incubation with unlabeled glucose and with 2,4-dinitrophenol established an energy requirement for transport of glyeine.Competition by glucose, glutamate, arginine, and proline was observed, and concentration against an ostootle gradient occurred both in air and under anoxie conditions. An active transport system was indicated, but the inhibitor and temperature effects suggested that other processes, such as passive diffusion, account for sotae glycine transfer.
