It is shown that the absorption tail in CdSe:Cr (d4) is due to photoionization of Cr impurities. The absorption spectrum is well described by a formula proposed by Allen in a wide range of Cr concentration ranging from 5 × 1017 to 5 × 1019 cm−3. The value of the matrix element of the optical transition from Cr (d4) to the conduction band suggests that the transition is from the extended s‐like bonding orbital rather than from 3d orbital. For high Cr concentrations about 1019 cm−3 interaction effects between impurities occur. It is also shown that two charge states: Cr2+ and probably Cr3+ are possible in CdSe.
