The growth of pigeon herpes encephalomyelitis agent and pathological changes induced in chick embryos were studied. Inoculation on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) proved it to be the most suitable route for inoculation and cultivation of the virus. Virus yields in the CAM were maximum on the third day postinoculation. The highest virus titers were in the allantoic fluids, CAM, and livers. Inoculation through the chorioallantoic sac (CAS) resulted in high lethality and comparatively good virus yields. However, inoculation through the yolk sac and amniotic cavity gave unsatisfactory yields. The cultural behavior of the virus in comparison with other herpesviruses of pigeons was discussed. Histologic changes of inoculated CAM were hyperplasia, necrosis, and intranuclear inclusion bodies.
