Growth hormone deficiency, either isolated (IGHD) or associated with other pi tuitary hormone deficiencies (MPHD) has been ascribed to many etiological factors. Traumatic injuries as well as other organic lesions which involve the hypothalamic-pituitary axis are known and evident causes. Cranial irradiation has been related recently with permanent or transient GH deficiency. Nutritional and emotional disorders are also causes of reversible hypopituitarism. Neverthe less in a great number of patients the pathogenesis of the GH deficiency remains unknown or at least speculative (Bierich 1971). Excluding those children in whom GH deficiency was related to organic CNS lesions or a reversible disease, we analize the etiological factors, familial incidence and association with distinctive syndromes as well as other pituitary hormones involvement in 290 children affected by GH deficiency diagnosed at the Division of Endocrinology of the Children’s Hospital of Buenos Aires.
