It is shown, that the effect of optical damage, which is observed by illumination of a ferroelectric semiconductor in the intrinsic or extrinsic optical region leads to the effect of anomalous bulk photovoltage (ABP-effect) in the direction of the spontaneous polarization. The ABP-effect is investigated for a number of ferroelectric niobates and it is shown that the ABP-effect may be caused by a Jahn-Teller mechanism.
