In a molecular field approximation the existence of incommensurate crystal phases in a linear chain with harmonic interaction between up to third neighbours and anharmonic nearest neighbour interaction is discussed. If nearest neighbour particles carry opposite charges, a phase transition towards a ferroelectric superstructure with an intermediate incommensurate phase occurs in the model.
