May support pericardiectomy in refractory pediatric staphylococcal pericarditis; hypothesis-generating from single case, needs prospective confirmation.
A case of acute staphylococcal pericarditis with constriction of the heart is reported. The response to antibiotics and simple pericardial drainage was poor. Pericardiectomy and decortication of the heart was performed on a moribund patient. Marked improvement followed surgery combined with intensive antibiotic therapy. At follow-up eight months later, the patient was a normal active 6-year-old boy.

N. V. Perera (1971) conducted a case report in Acute staphylococcal pericarditis with constriction of the heart (n=1). Pericardiectomy and decortication of the heart combined with intensive antibiotic therapy was evaluated on Clinical improvement. Pericardiectomy and decortication of the heart combined with intensive antibiotic therapy led to marked improvement and survival in a moribund 6-year-old boy with acute staphylococcal pericarditis.
