There are four compounds of iron with thorium, namely Th 7 Fe 3 , ThFe 3 , ThFe 5 and Th 2 Fe 17 . The spectra of Th 7 Fe 3 did not display magnetic splitting. ThFe 3 , ThFe 5 and Th 2 Fe 17 all exhibit magnetic splitting in their Mossbauer spectra though the type of magnetic condensation in ThFe 5 and Th 2 Fe 17 is not established. It was possible to make an analysis of the energy splittings for iron atoms at positions of high symmetry. In ThFe 3 the alpha -sites of high symmetry can be distinguished from the beta -sites of low symmetry. For ThFe 5 the spectra consist of two six- line contributions. All the iron atom sites in Th 2 Fe 17 have low symmetry and the spectra are complex.
