Late pregnancy linked to lower oesophageal sphincter pressure and asymptomatic reflux versus healthy controls.
Observational (n=41)
p-value: p=<0.05
Pregnant women in their last trimester have lower oesophageal sphincter pressure and are at risk for gastro-oesophageal reflux, even if asymptomatic, posing a risk for Mendelson's syndrome during general anesthesia.

May warrant aspiration precautions in late-pregnancy anesthesia; leaves open need for prospective outcome studies.
HEY et al. (1977) conducted an observational in Gastro-oesophageal reflux in late pregnancy (n=41). Late pregnancy vs. Healthy non-pregnant female controls was evaluated on Mean barrier pressure of the lower oesophageal sphincter (p=<0.05). Late pregnancy was associated with lower mean barrier pressure of the lower oesophageal sphincter compared to healthy controls (P<0.05), with reflux occurring even in asymptomatic pregnant women.
