The formation of three new metal-metal bonds results from the addition of CO to the tetranuclear complex 1. This process invovles the migration of the Rh center coordinatated to the arene ligand in 1 to the open edge of the Rh3 core to give the complex 2. The reaction is reversible, and thus the Rh center hops from one site to the other by addition or removal of a two-electron ligand 1,5-cyclooctadiene.
