Metal-Graphite Reagents in Carbohydrate Chemistry, VII. Fragmentation of 0-Alkylidene-Deoxy Halo Sugars.

Contrary to the methods previously described, treatment with zinc/-silver-graphite or potassium-graphite laminate (C8K) of the di-O-isopropylidene derivatives of l-deoxy-l-halo-ß-D-fructopyranose, l-deoxy-l-halo-α-L-sorbofuranose, 6-deoxy-6-iodo-α-D-galactopyranose, and 3-deoxy-3-iodo-α-D-glucofuranose resulted in the high yield formation of the respective unsaturated sugar derivatives by fragmentation with loss of one of the acetal groups.
